Moving can be hard on pets.
When it comes to moving, chaos isn’t in short supply. All of that chaos doesn’t stop with you, it actually affects your pets in a big way as well. Pets don’t plan to move, nor do they understand why they are being taken away from their home, and that can make for a very stressful situation. Although there isn’t a magic solution for your pet’s woes during your move, there are many things you can do to make the situation less stressful for both you and your pet. The following is a list from our experts of tips for moving with pets:
#1. Talk to your veterinarian.
If you are moving far away, you are going to need to find a new veterinarian. Before you move, make it a point to talk to your veterinarian. You can ask them if there are any veterinarians they recommend in your new city, get copies of your pet’s records and, if your pet is prone to anxiety and stress, ask about any medications or other interventions they suggest to ease their stress during your move.
#2. Prepare an overnight bag for your pet.
Whether you are on the road or in your new home, your pet is going to need to eat and get some of their energy out. Pack all of the essentials in an overnight bag for your pet. This bag should have food, treats, toys and anything you need to sustain your pet and keep them comfortable and happy until you get unpacked.
One of the best things you can do for your pet is to ensure that you don’t have too much anxiety during your move, as pets can feed off of your emotions.
